Smut Putt

by merrick

When I was first told to photograph Smut Putt, I had no idea what it was going to be about. “It’s an art backyard in South Austin” was what I was told by Mike. Thanks to technology, a quick google search showed me that this was a little more than a small art project. About 15 years ago Scott Stevens, the creator of Smut Putt, began collecting doll heads, crutches, plastic bottle caps and various other objects and started slowly building his art yard. Each one of the “snakes” that hangs from tree is made up of at least 100+ plastic caps that has been meticulously strung together on a piece of wire. Out of curiosity I asked where he got all of these objects. He told me that some was found on the side of the road, some was sought out and others were presents left at his gate by anonymous donors. Smut Putt is part of the Austin Yards Tour, so if you’d like to check it out, that would be a good time to stop on by.
